Museo Galileo

Opened in 2010, the Galileo Museum is housed in the historic Palazzo Castellani, formerly home to the Museum of the History of Science. Its extraordinary collections are among the most important worldwide and comprise historic scientific instruments dating from the 11th to the 19th centuries, including Galileo's original instruments that have been handed down to us; among them the only two existing telescopes, the objective lens, the geometric and military compass and the jovilabe. The museum has two main sections – the first, showing instruments purchased by the Medici dynasty, which was strongly dedicated to collecting works of art, nature and science, as many other lords in those times; the second, showing later objects belonging to the Lorraine Grand Dukes of Tuscany.
