Cappelle Medicee

The museum is part of the new sacristy, designed and conceived by Michelangelo, who built it starting from the same plant of the Old Sacristy of Brunelleschi. The monumental tombs dedicated to the Duke of Nemours Giuliano and his nephew Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino were also built by Michelangelo; there are also The Chapels of Princes, a monumental stone mausoleum, designed by Cosimo I, built by Matteo Nigetti and modified by Buontalenti; the Crypt, where the Grand Dukes of Medici and their family are buried; and the Lorena crypt, which houses, over the remains of the Lorena family, the tomb of Cosimo the Old “Pater Patrie”. The museum also houses part of the treasure of the basilica: sacred tapestries and beautiful reliquaries.
