The Villa di Castello is one of the oldest suburban residences of the Medici family, who owned it since 1477. Preferred by Cosimo I, it was subject to special treatment. Its garden, designed in 1538, a year after the rise to power of the young Duke, was designed to celebrate the power of the Prince through the symbology of its statues, fountains, and caves. Currently, the villa is not open to the public but its beautiful garden is full of citrus trees and rare plants, and decorated with ancient and Renaissance sculptures. The Cave of the animals, once animated by water features, has an extraordinary charm.
