Caravaggio and the twentieth century. Roberto Longhi, Anna Banti
The exhibition is a charming journey to rediscover the couple Roberto Longhi (art historian) and Anna Banti (writer and translator), who gathered artists and intellectuals who shaped the Italian twentieth century.
The exhibition is composed of twelve sections: from Longhi the collector, a great discoverer of Caravaggio, to those on the relationship between Longhi and cinema and between Longhi and his teaching activity. One room is dedicated to Anna Banti as an art historian, writer and translator, who has the merit of having rediscovered the story of Artemisia, accompanied by a selection of the many drawings that Roberto Longhi himself dedicated to her and a series of photographs that portray her in the rooms of the villa Il Tasso.
About forty paintings are on display, alongside drawings and watercolors, original photographs and archive documents that testify to the couple's frequentation and reflect their bond with artists such as Carlo Carrà, Renato Guttuso, Filippo de Pisis and Pier Paolo Pasolini. A section dedicated to his friendship with Giorgio Morandi, whom Longhi defined as “one of the best living painters in Italy”, is a must.
The itinerary also includes a Silent Room, where you can rest your eyes and mind, overwhelmed by the suggestions offered by the exhibition.
On display are great masterpieces such as Caravaggio’s Boy Bitten by a Lizard, Jusepe de Ribera’s Apostles and the exciting sequence of ten intimate Morandis, created by the Bolognese artist, given as gifts on different occasions to Roberto Longhi and Anna Banti.
