Victor Man
A retrospective dedicated to one of the most influential contemporary painters: Victor Man.
Victor Man (born in 1974) was born and educated in Romania; today, he lives and works in Europe. His early life was shaped by the political climate of the 1980s under Ceaușescu’s communist regime — a time when he experienced firsthand deprivation, isolation, censorship, and coercion — experiences that would profoundly influence his artistic output. Indeed, Man developed a distinctive visual language capable of weaving together references to literature, art history, and his own personal biography into a narrative that defies linear chronology.
The exhibition traces the Romanian artist’s painting practice from 2008 to 2026 through twenty-five paintings that seem to emerge from the semi-darkness, inviting a slow, almost ritualistic gaze. These are works saturated with memory, in which the familiar figure becomes uncanny yet remains perfectly legible. Sudden flashes of color emerge from the depths of the surfaces: saturated reds, rosy flesh tones, milky whites, and greens and blues that seem to hold an inner light.
In the works from the series "Luminary Petals on a Wet, Black Bough", the contrast between dark backgrounds and areas of intense color creates a style that is at once austere and sensual, where bursts of color serve a structural function: a red hue surfacing from the shadows or a face lighter than the background alters the scene’s emotional temperature. The painting oscillates between two opposing movements: the image sinks into darkness while the color strives to re-emerge. Thus, for the artist, light becomes a form of resistance. His art is a constant challenge to discover objects shrouded in shadow (butterflies, pearls, skulls, etc.), compelling the viewer to slow down their gaze; his figures seem to belong to another dimension, immersed in an atmosphere of reflection and melancholy.
Man’s works offer a complex vision of reality that goes beyond mere appearances.
