MAD Murate art District is located in the monumental complex of the Murate, in a quadrilateral between via Ghibellina, via dell'Agnolo and viale della Giovine Italia.

The Complex, owned by the Municipality of Florence, includes the former fifteenth-century monastery transformed into a prison from 1883 to 1985, and is now divided into two squares: Piazza delle Murate and Piazza della Madonna della Neve, divided by Via delle Vecchie Carceri. MAD Murate Art District is a centre for contemporary art and artist residences of the Municipality of Florence, presents installations and art performances, music, contemporary dance in the spaces of the old convent; it is articulated on 3 floors, dedicated to exhibitions and residences, and houses the Hard Prison, a pulsating testimony of the Resistance carried out by the fathers of the Republic during the Fascist period – and it is open to the public.
