The Museum of Fashion and Costumes, known as “Costume Gallery”, is the first Italian state museum to look at the history of fashion and its importance to society. The Museum is located in the Palazzina della Meridiana, which takes the name after the astronomic instrument created by Vincenzo Viviani in 1699 and displayed in the vestibule of the old apartment of the Great Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici. All the dynasties that have succeeded, from the Lorena to the Savoy, left their touch in the furniture and decorations of wall paintings.
With a collection of roughly six thousand pieces, including ancient and modern clothes, accessories and theatrical costumes, it is the only museum of the history of fashion in Italy and one of the most important at international level. Temporary exhibitions and frequently rotating permanent exhibitions ensure the preservation of the collection. Newly displayed rooms reopened in late 2023 after a lengthy period of closure.
