Palazzo Vecchio is a symbol of Florence. Built in 1299 as the seat of the Republic of Florence, it has been the hub of the Florentine government for over seven centuries and is still the seat of the Municipality of Florence or “city hall”.
The museum of Palazzo Vecchio gives you access to luxuriously decorated vast halls and private environments used by the 16th-century Medici court. The visit begins in the Cortile di Michelozzo, accessed by the main door that is flanked by the copy of Michelangelo’s David and Baccio Bandinelli’s Hercules and Cacus. At the center of this frescoed courtyard is the copy of Verrocchio’s Putto with Dolphin, while the original is located upstairs.
Climbing elegant stairs to the Salone dei Cinquecento a majestic painting cycle celebrates the apotheosis of Cosimo de’ Medici and city of Florence on the walls and ceilings, while the room is lined with a series of statues including the Genius of Victory by Michelangelo.
On the second floor, explore what were the private rooms of the Medici Court, all sumptuously decorated and furnished, don’t miss the tiny and richly decorated Chapel of Eleonora, with paintings by Agnolo Bronzino. Towards the end of your visit is the Hall of Geographic Maps, which contains a globe of exceptional size and over fifty painted panels that offer an extraordinary view of all parts of the world known in the 16th century. The Quartiere del Mezzanino houses a prestigious collection of paintings and sculptures dating back to the Medieval and Renaissance period, donated to the City of Florence by Charles Loeser.
Weather permitting, Firenzecard holders can also access the tower walk that affords an exceptional view of the city.
