The Petraia is one of the most charming Medicean villas for its beautiful landscape, for the excellence of the paintings and the lush nature of the park. Not far from Florence, is a typical suburban residence of the Medicis. The ancient fortified building, of which only the great tower remains, was enlarged in the late sixteenth century; the surrounding land was excavated to frame the villa in the beautiful terraced garden. The courtyard of the villa is decorated with frescoes by Volterrano and Cosimo Daddi. The famous Venus bronze sculpture by Giambologna, which completed the homonymous fountain in the Castello villa garden, is now installed inside to preserve it.
