William Demby. Tremendous mobility
The exhibition is entirely dedicated to the rediscovery of the archive of the author, journalist, musician and actor William Demby, an important figure in the cultural environment of post-war Italy, who deserves attention and in-depth analysis.
The participation in the Avant-garde of the 1950s in Rome, the commitment to collecting works of art, the role in shaping the interdisciplinarity of art, together with the experimental contributions offered to the literary canon, attest to its leading role in the artistic panorama; writings relating to Ethiopia and Eritrea in the post-colonial period, as well as reviews of key events, such as the 1959 Second Congress of Black Writers and Artists and the 1956 Venice Biennale, reveal a singular perspective and critical vision.
The exhibition displays previously unpublished documents and photographs, in addition to a collection of publications and artistic reflections relating to the historical impact of William Demby, curated by Kevin Jerome Everson and Justin Randolph Thompson.
