The Cenacolo di Andrea del Sarto is a museum principally dedicated to the Last Supper fresco by the Renaissance painter Andrea del Sarto and it is located in what is now a residential area outside the historic center of Florence. The large fresco depicting the Last Supper on the back wall of the refectory was commissioned by Abbot Ilario Panichi to Andrea del Sarto in 1511 and completed in 1527. Andrea del Sarto, who drew inspiration form the famous Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, depicts the apostles receiving the announcement of the betrayal by Jesus, with the addition at the top side, of a small and original scene of two characters on a terrace, looking at the event.
The museum path, set up in the various areas of the convent (hall, kitchen, washroom, refectory) displays paintings of the 16th century coming from churches and monasteries of the city of Florence that were shut down. These include works by Pontormo (in particular Fede e Carità (Faith and Charity), on the opposite side of the refectory, above the entrance), Franciabigio, Raffaellino del Garbo, Bachiacca, Carlo Portelli, Bernardino Poccetti and a series of paintings by Plautilla Nelli (1524–1588) – one of the few female artists documented by Giorgio Vasari in the Vite and renowned today for being the first “woman painter in Florence”.
