The complex of the church and monastery of San Salvatore in Ognissanti, founded in the 12th century, hosts the Refectory with the Last Supper by Domenico Ghirlandaio painted in 1480. Located on the back wall, the large fresco creates a powerful illusion game, expanding the architecture of the hall that is transformed into an open gallery. The artist, who had already been working for the church at Ognissanti and was used to working with these patrons, used his much appreciated style full of details and colour, mixing the psychological representation of the apostles with realistic details like the table, food, trees and birds, inspired to the traditional repertoire of the symbols of Passion and Resurrection. The Refectory also hosts the sinopia (preliminary drawing) of the painting, removed from underneath the fresco during restoration, in addition to the other sinopias and frescoes coming from the church, and a precious sculpture of the Madonna con Bambino (Virgin Mary with child) by Nanni di Bartolo, in polychrome terracotta.
